The immersion of the statues in the ocean, or other bodies of water, and subsequent destruction of them serves as a reminder of this belief.

Celebrations in Mauritius can be date back to 1896 when the first Ganesh Chaturthi Puja(Ganesh Chaturthi Songs) was held in the Seven Cascades Valley by the Bhiwajee family. After this, the ‘ shhodashopachara’ (16 ways of paying tribute) follows.

Coconut, jaggery, 21 ‘modakas’ (rice flour preparation), 21 ‘durva’ (trefoil) blades and red flowers are offer. The idol is anoint with red unguent or sandal paste (rakta chandan). Throughout the ceremony, Vedic hymns from the Rig Veda and Ganapati Atharva Shirsha Upanishad, and Ganesha stotra from the Narada Purana are chant.

For 10 days, from Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi to the Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesha is worship. On the 11th day, the image is taken through the streets in a procession accompanies by dancing, singing, to be immerse in a river or the sea. This symbolizes a ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of all man.

All join in this final procession, shouting “Ganapathi Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya” (O father Ganesha, come again early next year). After the final offering of coconuts, flowers and camphor are made, people carry the idol to the river to immerse it.

The whole community comes to worship Ganesha in beautifully done tents. These also serve as the venue for free medical checkups, blood donation camps, a charity for the poor, dramatic performances, films, devotional songs, etc. during the days of the festival.

Visarjan Dates

The largest Ganesh statues, on display to the public, are usually immerse on Anant Chaturdasi — 11 days after the first day of the Ganesh festival.

However, many people who keep a Ganesh in their homes choose to perform the immersion much before this. There are no hard and fast rules as to when it’s done. Rather it’s up to personal preference. However, the immersions do follow a schedule and are only perform on select days. These are as follows.

  • One and half day Ganesh Visarjan – August 26, 2017.
  • Three day Ganesh Visarjan – August 27, 2017.
  • Five day Ganesh Visarjan – August 29, 2017.
  • Seven day Ganesh Visarjan – August 31, 2017.
  • Gauri Visarjan — August 31, 2017. Gauri idols, commonly taken home and worship along with Lord Ganesh in Maharashtra on Gauri Avahan (on August 29, 2017) will be immerse on this day. Goddess Gauri is another name for Goddess Parvati, the mother of Lord Ganesh.
